Launch of Decentralized AI Society to Combat Monopoly in Artificial Intelligence

Summary

A coalition of industry leaders has established a non-profit organization named the Decentralized AI Society (DAIS), aimed at addressing concerns regarding the monopolization of the artificial intelligence sector by dominant technology companies. The organization is led by Mr. Michael Casey, who previously served as the chief content officer at CoinDesk and is also the chair of the annual Consensus conference organized by the aforementioned media company. DAIS was initiated by eight founding members, which include prominent entities such as CETI AI, Filecoin Foundation, Bloq, Hypercycle, Morpheus, Hemi, Odyssey, and Lumerin. During a recent interview at the Token2049 blockchain conference in Singapore, Mr. Casey elaborated on the need for DAIS, stating, “The decentralized AI society acknowledges that centralized platforms in the AI landscape are significantly ahead, possessing vast amounts of data and computational resources, as well as considerable influence over regulatory frameworks.” The organization has set forth four primary objectives: 1. Securing investment for the decentralized AI ecosystem amidst what is becoming an arms race for crucial resources, such as graphical processing units (GPUs) and the associated data centers. 2. Shaping policy to draft comprehensive AI regulations. 3. Promoting education and awareness surrounding the principles of decentralized AI. 4. Developing engineering solutions to create innovative algorithms for distributed learning models. In light of the escalating power wielded by technology giants such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Apple, Mr. Casey articulated the imperative for DAIS to advocate for a decentralized approach to AI, remarking, “What choice do we have but to fight for a decentralized form of AI? I refuse to accept that the challenges we face are insurmountable; there lies an obligation upon us to confront this predicament.” The formation of the Decentralized AI Society represents a critical step in ensuring that the future of artificial intelligence development remains equitable and decentralizes power away from the major tech companies that currently dominate the field. As the organization embarks on its mission, it seeks to cultivate an environment that fosters fair competition and innovation within the AI industry.
